GSS Features & Benefits

  • All relevant training parameters are stored in the GSS database, including: Sound Velocity Profile (SVP), own ship and target's acoustic parameters, environment and sea acoustic parameters, scenarios
  • New exercises can be created, and existing exercises can be retrieved from GSS Exercise Library
  • Target types include: surface ships, submarines, mines, torpedoes, schools of fish, etc.
  • Ship types include: surface ships, submarines
  • Simulated acoustic signals include: active target echo, target BB and NB radiated noise (including DEMON and transients), transmissions of active sonar onboard targets, ambient noise, reverberation and self noise including flow noise.
  • Sonar receivers and processors are simulated by performing real signal processing of the simulated acoustic signals (identical to the real sonar system), in order to generate realistic video and audio.

Note: In many other sonar simulators, video and audio are generated either by using the real sonar system units (costly) or by analytical calculation of the expected video and audio (simulation not realistic).

Features
Targets

  • Number of targets: 16
  • Active characteristics: target strengths & highlights (as a function of aspect angle)
  • Passive characteristics:
  • BB and NB spectrum of each noise source onboard target (as a function of
         aspect
     angle and speed)
  • Several noise sources may be defined
  • DEMON (as a function of RPM, number of blades, number of shafts)
  • Transients
  • Onboard active sonar
  • Dynamics: platforms - straight line with piloting by Instructor, torpedo - typical dynamics        (search and homing phase)
      • Own Ship

      • Self noise due to BB, NB, DEMON sources
      • Flow noise (as a function of speed and dome parameters)
      • Environment and Sea Acoustic Parameters
      • SVP
      • Wind speed
      • Bottom depth and material
      • Sub-bottom parameters
      • Reverberation parameters
      • Shipping density
      • Rain
      • Ice
      • Biologic
      • Seismic
      • Transmission Loss Calculation
      • Ray model for frequency above 1 kHz
      • Normal mode model for frequency below 1 kHz

        Sonar Model
      • Transmitter: frequency, pulse length, source level, modulation, transmission mode
      • (Omni, Directional, RDT, etc.), PRI
      • Active search receivers: energy detector, coherent processor, split beam correlator, etc.
      • Passive BB receivers: energy detector, split beam correlator, etc.
      • Passive NB receiver
      • Active classification: A-Scope
      • Passive classification: DEMON, LOFAR
      • Active and passive tracking
      • Audio

GSS generates realistic sonar audio that can be controlled by the sonar operator: omni-, slaved to cursor/target, heterodyne/non heterodyne, band pass filtered.

          Video
GSS generates sonar video for all typical display formats: B-Scope, A-Scope, PPI, passive amplitude/bearing, passive waterfall (BT), DEMON, LOFAR, NB frequency/bearing (BFI), active bearing track (SSI), active Doppler track (TDI), passive bearing track (BDI), etc.

        • Benefits

        • Low cost enables purchase of multiple systems, allowing on-site training at navy bases      and schools
        • No need for actual sonar system units
        • Trainees experience video and audio that are identical to actual environments with real
                targets
        • Basic system enables training of one sonar team at one platform against targets
        • System can be extended to include two platforms, each having its own sonar team,
or  several sonar systems and teams onboard the platform
